Early Life and Education
Michael Craig-Martin was born on August 28, 1941, in Dublin, Ireland.
He spent his early childhood in London and Wales during the war years before moving to Washington, D.C., with his family in 1945. Craig-Martin attended Yale University, where he studied art from 1961 to 1963.
Artistic Beginnings
After graduating from Yale, Craig-Martin returned to the UK in 1966 and accepted a teaching position at the Bath Academy of Art.
In 1968, he became a lecturer at the Canterbury College of Art. His first solo exhibition was held at the Rowan Gallery in London in 1969.
