    The Lost Grave Of Johnny Behan

    At three o’clock in the morning of June 7, 1912, one of Tombstone's most colorful pioneers peacefully and virtually unnoticed ended a career of action, excitement, and controversy.

    Behan, Cochise County’s first sheriff, had held numerous other prominent political offices. He was survived by four sisters, a brother, and one son.

    They buried him and promptly forgot him, as did everyone else for seventy-eight years.
    Early in 1990, I had just published my book, The Chronicles of Tombstone, and had begun work on a sequel, which was to include a chapter on John Behan.

    I wanted a photo of Behan’s grave to illustrate the chapter, and since most of the area’s pioneers sleep the long sleep in Tucson’s Evergreen Cemetery, I began my search there.
    Evergreen Cemetery had no record of Behan’s burial
